Norwegian Defence Force on Krøttøy
Krøttøy Radar Station
During the Cold War, the primary objective of the Royal Norwegian Army was to monitor and control its coastal areas. The surveillance started in 1983, with the goal of providing information about suspicious activity in the coastal areas. The installation of radar equipment in military forts and stations was highly prioritized.
In 1954 all forts in the area, except Trondenes, had installed AN/SPN-5 or Decca 974 radars. Additionally, AN/SPN-5 radars were deployed at the two stations Elgsnes and Krøttøy.
